Due to limited phone reception at Green Cape Lighthouse, we cannot be notified of delays. Tank water is available at the campsites. You can resupply at the drop toilet locations at Morrawary and Hegarty’s campsites, as well as Saltwater (day 2) and Bittangabee Bay (day 3) campsites. NSW National Parks recommends boiling all water before use.
Can I drink water from the creeks?
While you will pass many flowing creeks, NSW National Parks recommends boiling or treating all water from tanks or creeks before drinking. (I didn’t treat the water from the tanks or creeks and I’m still alive BTW).
Yes! Please see our blog post on “Light to Light Packing List.“
You will likely see kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, and goannas. In warmer months, you may encounter snakes (Brown, Red-belly Black, Diamond Pythons) and ticks.
We have not had any issues with theft or break-ins. However, please be aware that parking is not secure, and there is no official surveillance.
We strongly recommend carrying a snake bite bandage and knowing how to use it, as well as tick removal medication (like Lyclear or Tick-Off) tweezers and antibacterial wipes.
The main consideration is the Saltwater Creek crossing. It’s possible to cross in both high and low tides.
In the event of a king high tide and large swell, reconsider the walk entirely, as you may need to avoid dangerous rock platforms and Saltwater Creek Crossing.
Yes, the platforms are large enough for two average-sized hiking tents. Leave your tent pegs at home and make sure to have the guide ropes or additional ropes for tying down your tent to the platforms.
Yes, we can. While most guests prefer the morning transfer (Green Cape to Boyds Tower) to walk back to their vehicle at their leisure, we can arrange an end-of-hike pickup. We require a minimum of 4 guests for a confirmed end-of-hike transfer.
Drop toilets at Morrawary and Hegarty’s can run out.
As this is our first year running transfers, we don’t have long-term data yet. We hit our 4-guest minimum every day during the Spring school holidays. Outside of peak times, we usually run 1–2 transfers per week, with Fridays being the most popular. If you are booked for <4 guests, we highly recommend booking with a long lead time or contacting us to see which dates already have other bookings.
Yes! Providing you meet the 4-guest minimum payment, we can collect you from the Port of Eden at a time that aligns with your cruise and drop you at the trail. We recommend hiking the Saltwater to Bittangabee Bay (9 km) section so you can finish with a swim. We will then return you directly to the port of Eden. We can also arrange a packed lunch and a guide—please contact us to finalise arrangements.
Yes. You can hire a PLB free of charge from Merimbula National Parks office.
Absolutely. The entire trail can be done in a day, or you can opt for a shorter section.
For a roughly 20 km walk, contact us to arrange a pickup from Bittangabee Bay. We can drop you at Boyds Tower around 10:30 AM, allowing you to walk back to your vehicle at Bittangabee Bay.
To operate Light to Light transfers, we incur significant costs, including a $1000 annual fee to NSW Parks for exclusive rights, $11 -person fees, and mandatory Merimbula transfers, resulting in a minimum 5-hour staff time commitment per trip, in addition to our general eco-parks operator fees. Please read our Terms and Conditions before booking.
Yes, it is $8 per day. We recommend pre-booking online via the NSW National Parks website. If you pay on the day, you will need the exact change or to call the Merimbula NP office (which may be difficult due to limited phone reception).
Telstra has reliable reception at Boyds Tower and Morrawary Beach campsite. Reception is patchy and unreliable elsewhere, particularly between Morrawary and Green Cape.
Many guests camp at Bittangabee Bay for a quick 15-minute drive to the Green Cape Lighthouse transfer point. Nearby options include Boyds Town, Eden (Heritage Accomodation, Eden Motel), and Merimbula (NRMA, Palms Apartments, Hillcrest).
There is no bad time!
The trail is set up to match the camping platforms, with a first night at Morrawary and a second at Hegarty’s. Walking southbound also means you will have the sun at your back for most of the day.
There are pros and cons for both routes: The inland route offers more shade, wildflowers, a flatter path, and to avoids the 540 stairs on the coastal route. Want to walk the scenic coastal route on the last day? Stash your heavy packs at Bittangabee and carry only essentials for the final 8 km to Green Cape Lighthouse. After reaching your car, take the 6 km return detour to drive back and retrieve your bags.
Absolutely! We can provide transfers. You park your car at the end location each day, and we transfer you to the start. Contact us for a custom quote and schedule.
Day 1 (14 km): Pick up from Saltwater Creek and transfer to Boyds Tower.
Day 2 (18 km): Pick up from Green Cape Lighthouse and transfer to Saltwater Creek.
Day 1 (14 km): Pick up from Saltwater Creek and transfer to Boyds Tower.
Day 2 (9 km): Pick up from Bittangabee Bay and transfer to Saltwater Creek.
Day 3 (8 km): Pick up from Green Cape Lighthouse and transfer to Bittangabee Bay.
No, but we appreciate as much notice as possible so we can arrange vehicles and staff. If a transfer is fully booked, we can usually add an earlier or later slot.
This minimum ensures we can cover essential operational costs:
Driver/Guide Time: Approximately 5 hours for the full round-trip transfer.
Mandatory Fees: NSW National Parks receives 10% of gross revenue.
Licensing: We pay annual fees (approx. $1,640) for both NPWS and point-to-point transfer licenses.
No, but we may in the future if there is enough demand. Feel free to contact us if this is a service you would use.
Definitely. The Light to Light is an excellent introductory multi-day hike for families (we’ve even taken an 11-month-old!). It is ideal because it features varied scenery, abundant wildlife, and multiple access points for safety.
No. We operate under an exclusive commercial agreement with NSW National Parks. This license requires us to pay a significant annual fee and a 10% gross revenue contribution, which ensures we are the sole licensed provider.
